What is a normal red blood cell count?

A normal red blood cell count in adults is typically between 4.5-5.5 million red blood cells per microliter (mcL) of blood for men and 4.0-5.0 million red blood cells per mcL of blood for women. Children's values may differ slightly based on age.

Having a normal red blood cell count is important as they carry oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues. A low red blood cell count, or anemia, can result in fatigue, shortness of breath, and weakness, while a high red blood cell count, or polycythemia, could increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. Regular blood tests can determine if your red blood cell count is within normal range.
